When Life Gets Heavy
What to say when there is nothing to say, and who to call when two of you is not enough.
Case file
When Rosa’s father had his stroke, Rosa took charge of it. She knew the ward’s visiting hours by heart, kept a color-coded medication chart on her mother’s refrigerator, and issued a schedule to her two brothers, who followed it the way people follow a diet.
Frank did not know what to say, so he said very little. He drove. He carried things. On the second Saturday he was missing for four hours.
The following week Rosa stood at her parents’ kitchen sink and noticed the quiet. That faucet had dripped since she was fifteen. So had the one in the bathroom, and the one outside by the hose. None of them dripped now.
Frank had still not said anything. Rosa decided he had said quite a lot.

Nobody appointed you the strong one
In most families there is one person who, when the phone rings with bad news, reaches for a pen. If that is you, you know the duties. By the end of the first day you have the doctor’s name, the parking arrangements and a list. Relatives call you for updates and stay on the line to be comforted.
Competence is a very good disguise. Your partner looks at you, sees a person with a list and a charged phone, and concludes that you are managing. Nobody can tell from the outside that you last sat down on Tuesday.
You do not have to be the strong one for everybody. Rosa ran her father’s illness for ten days before she noticed that not one person had asked how she was. Three had asked how her mother was holding up, and one had asked about parking. She had made the question look unnecessary.
So say what you need, in one plain sentence. Leave off the apology at the front and the explanation at the back. One sentence is enough, and it usually comes as a relief to the person hearing it. Your partner has very likely spent days wanting to help and not knowing where to stand. A plain sentence tells them where.
