More Than One Way to Fold a Towel

For people who re-fold the towels, and the people whose towels get re-folded.

Case file

Elena folded the towels in half and then in half again. Marcus, passing the closet, took out all nine and re-folded them into the three-panel hotel fold, edges hidden, which he believed was simply how towels were.

On Thursday she parked the car. He went out in his slippers and moved it eight inches to the left.

Elena said nothing. She stopped folding in February and stopped parking in May.

One Saturday Marcus stood over a full laundry basket and asked why he was the only person in the house who ever folded anything. Elena, who was reading, said she had been let go.

He folded for most of an hour. Every towel was perfect, and nobody came to look.

LESSON 1 · FREE PREVIEW

The towel has no opinion

There are several ways to fold a towel. In half and half again. In three, like a letter. Rolled, as in the kind of bathroom that has a candle. Each has its supporters, and each ends in the same place: a dry towel, in a closet, available to a wet person.

That is the whole test, and the Faculty asks you to learn it by heart: did it work? The towel dried someone. The car is in the driveway and both its doors open. The child went to bed, even though the story came before the teeth. If the answer is yes, the inspection is over.

Your method feels like more than a method because you have used it for years and it has never let you down. It has a history. You could defend it to a panel. Your partner’s method has exactly the same credentials, earned in a different house, from a different parent, with different towels.

So when you see a thing done differently, the Faculty requests a short pause before the word “wrong” is issued. Look at the result. A towel folded in halves dries a person just as well. It merely sits in the closet looking, to one member of the household, like a small accusation.

Your practical assignmentFind one thing your partner does differently from you: towels, parking, the order of a bedtime. Ask yourself only whether it worked. If it did, say nothing about it for a week. Your face counts as saying something.
