Keep your friends, your hobby and your Saturday, and tell your partner before you tell the chat.

Case file

Every Saturday since March, Dev had left the house at 6:30 with a metal detector and come back at five. On the eleventh Saturday he brought home a buckle, four bottle caps and a spoon.

Carla had spent the day on the groceries, the pharmacy and a seven-year-old’s birthday party with a magician. She looked at the spoon and said, “Lovely.” Then she went upstairs and told nine friends in a group chat what she actually thought.

The chat was unanimous by 5:20. Priya sent a small shovel.

At six Dev put his head around the door and asked if everything was all right. He was the tenth person to be told that he and Carla were having an argument, and the only one of the ten who lived there.

One person cannot be nine people

A partner is a fine thing to have. A partner who is also your only friend, your entire weekend, your career adviser and the one person who has to hear your views on the neighbors’ hedge is doing five jobs, and will start to look tired around the eyes.

You both need other people, and things to do that have nothing to do with the house. Friends who knew you before you shared a bank account. A choir, a Tuesday card game, a field with a spoon in it. People with a life outside the relationship bring things home to it: news, opinions, a long story about a man called Otto who cheats at cards.

This only works if the outside life stays theirs. When your partner comes back from an evening with friends, “It was fun” is all the report required. Asking who was there, what was said and whether your name came up turns a night out into a witness statement. The good parts will come out on their own over the next few days, usually while you are trying to watch something.

You get the same latitude. If the only thing you do alone each week is buy groceries, it is time to find something. It need not be impressive or good for you. It only has to be yours, and to happen somewhere your partner is not.

Your practical assignmentThink of one friend you have not seen on your own in six months and message them today with a date. Then tell your partner when you will be out. You do not need to bring back a report, or a spoon.

The Registrar rules

Your partner should be the first person to hear that you are upset with them. Tenth is too late, and ninth is not much better.
