Date Night Is Not a Meeting
How to go out for the evening without bringing the house along.
Case file
Ruth and Ellie had not been out alone together for five months. On the first Friday in June they finally got a table at the Lebanese place with the blue door.
Ruth had prepared. As the bread arrived she unfolded a sheet of paper headed “While we have each other.” It had seven items. Item one was the garage door. Item five was whose family got them in December.
Ellie had prepared too, in that her phone was charged. She photographed the bread. She photographed the lamb from above, standing up. She asked Ruth to hold the candle nearer the eggplant.
By dessert they had settled the garage door. The baklava got sixty-one likes, one of them from Ruth, who was sitting opposite it.
LESSON 1 · FREE PREVIEW
A table for two and a list of seven
The list comes to dinner for a respectable reason. When two people run a home, two jobs and possibly some children, an evening out may be the first time in weeks that you have each other’s full attention and nothing is boiling over. So the garage door gets its hearing between the bread and the main course. It feels efficient. So does a staff meeting.
The cost is the evening. You already know your partner’s position on the garage door. You may not know what they are reading, who is annoying them at work or what they have changed their mind about lately, because for five months every conversation between you has had a deliverable.
There is a second way to miss the dinner, which is to send it to other people while it is happening. A plate photographed from three angles is being enjoyed by sixty-one people who are not at the table. One picture is a souvenir. After that you are working, unpaid, in the restaurant’s publicity department.
Both habits come from wanting the evening to count. It counts when the two of you are in it. A fair test, at about nine o’clock, is whether you have learned one thing about your partner that you did not know at seven. The price of a garage door does not qualify.
